Moxibustion

Moxibustion, an ancient therapeutic technique, involves the controlled burning of mugwort (moxa) near acupuncture points to facilitate the flow of energy (Qi) throughout the body, providing pain relief and promoting overall well-being.

This traditional healing practice utilises moxa, typically derived from dried mugwort, burned near specific acupuncture points or areas of concern. Moxibustion methods include direct application, where a moxa cone is placed and ignited directly on the skin, and indirect application, where a moxa stick is held near the skin or over an acupuncture point without direct contact, generating therapeutic heat.

Moxibustion benefits

  • Pain Relief: Moxibustion is commonly employed to alleviate various types of pain, including muscle and joint pain, as well as chronic conditions like arthritis. The heat produced can relax muscles and trigger the release of natural pain-relieving substances.
  • Enhanced Circulation: The warmth generated by moxibustion contributes to improved blood circulation, particularly beneficial for conditions associated with compromised circulation.
  • Digestive Issues: Moxibustion is applied to address digestive problems such as diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and indigestion, promoting harmonious digestive system functioning.
  • Immune Support: Traditional Chinese medicine attributes immune system strengthening to moxibustion, enhancing resistance to illness by balancing energy flow and fostering overall health.
  • Turning Breech Babies: Specialised “breech moxibustion” is employed to encourage babies in the breech position to turn head-down before childbirth, often in conjunction with acupuncture.
  • Menstrual Irregularities: Moxibustion is utilised to address menstrual issues, promoting hormonal balance and alleviating discomfort associated with painful periods and irregular cycles.
  • Fertility Support: Some individuals integrate moxibustion into fertility treatments, aiming to regulate the menstrual cycle and enhance overall reproductive health.
